The 4C's that Determines the Quality of Tanzanite Earrings

Tanzanite is a beautiful gemstone. It is becoming rare by the day ever since it was the first discovered and mined from Merelani Mines near Mt. Kilimanjaro in the Republic of Tanzania in the 1960s. Geologists believe that volume of tanzanite remaining in the mines will only last for the next 30 years or so. The fact that it is only mined in one place and is fast becoming a rare gemstone makes it one of the most sought-after gemstones, which makes it precious and therefore expensive.

Tanzanite Earrings
Tanzanite is used by jewelry manufacturers to make classic jewelry pieces including engagement rings, wedding rings, pendants, necklaces, bangles, and earrings. There are indeed different tanzanite earrings brands in the market, and one of the top brands in the market is Top Tanzanite. Concerning quality, you need to consider investing your hard-earned money in is Top Tanzanite earrings. The fact that Tanzanite makes available different tanzanite earrings can make choosing the best a big challenge. You need to consider the following factors to help you picks the best tanzanite earrings. You mainly need to pay attention to the 4Cs that determines the quality of tanzanite used in making earrings: color, cut, weight, and clarity.
Color:
There is nothing like tanzanite when it comes to color. It is indeed this gemstone’s unique color that made it very popular with jewelry manufacturers. Tanzanite presents different colors in different light environments. For instance, it turns blue when you hold it in bright sunlight wish shades of violet. It is also bound to turn either violet or red indoors under incandescent lighting. It is a good idea to go with grade guidelines issued by Gemological Institute of America (GIA). According to the Institute, quality tanzanite earrings are those with deep hue, dark tone, and deep color saturation. It is important to note that newly mined Tanzanite does not have these qualities. The qualities are a result of the degree of processing.

Cut:
The type of cut informs a quality of tanzanite earrings you buy. You are bound to find many different types of cut including oval, trillion, cushion, pear-shaped, heart, emerald cut, round and princess tanzanite earrings. Quality earrings should be one cut to allow for the glow from within. Tanzanite does not glow. It is the way that it is the cut that makes it possible for the gemstone to reflect light.
Weight:
You are bound to come across Tanzanite earrings of different carat weight. One carat of tanzanite weight about 0.2 grams. How valuable earrings you buy are is determined by its carat weight. The greater the carat weight, the higher the value. Note that this is the values and not quality. Choice of weight to go for really depends on your preference.
Clarity:
The quality of tanzanite and by extension quality of tanzanite earrings you buy is determined by the clarity of the tanzanite gemstone used. Quality earrings of tanzanite should not have cracks or impurities underneath the surface. Earrings that you plan to buy should be shiny and clear right from within and not just reflect light from the surface.
Tanzanite earrings are some of the most expensive jewelry pieces in the market, and it is only appropriate that you care for them properly. Tanzanite is not as hard as diamond. It is important that you avoid wearing your tanzanite earrings during strenuous activities to prevent scratches or fracture. You should also make use of a moist piece of cloth with cold water when you need to clean them before drying with a clean, dry soft towel. Because you are most likely to store the earrings, do ensure that you wrap them in a soft cloth before storing in a safe, dry place.

Treatment of Loose Stones used in Tanzanite Studs Earrings

  Zoisite Tanzanite Rough Stone
A relatively recent addition to the gemstone market, tanzanite’s limited origin and brilliant blue color has helped it climb the jewel market ladder with great speed. A stone so much rarer than even diamonds, tanzanite in the past decade has owned the position of the second most loved colored gem in the United States, preceded only by sapphire. Marking Tanzanite What few people are fully aware of, is the fact that when rough tanzanite is mined from the foothill of Mt. Kilimanjaro, more often than not it doesn’t look at all as it does in the market. Instead freshly mined rough tanzanite loose stones are a dull yellow-brown in color, and it takes skill to even differentiate it from the base rock at times. If you’ve been scouting the market to buy tanzanite stones, you should have a decent idea of the treatments it goes through. Loose tanzanite gem stones are the hardest to sell as they have no embellishments masking its flaws, so often jewelers tend to overcompensate for these by excessively treating the rough stone – increasing its outer beauty but degrading the value and quality. Once mined, rough tanzanite stones are heated to approximately 500 degrees (sometimes even more depending on the quality of the stone) in crucibles. This treatment causes changes in the crystal, and once the treatment is complete and the gem is taken out and cooled, its changed properties are retained permanently. Depending on the degree of heat it bears, its color intensifies – changing it from the dull brown to a permanent blue (ranging between pale sky blue, rich cobalt and violet).
Bruting Tanzanite
This treatment can also be done once the rough stone is faceted – that is once it has been cut to the desired shape and its outer planes have been angled ideally to maximize refraction (hence its sparkle). Treatments impact the color to a great degree, but not all tanzanite gems are blue. Heat treatment doesn’t change the color of the rough stone, it only brings out and intensifies the already existing shade. Hues range from blues to violets to red-purple, some even with tints of grey, brown and green. Even so, the most valuable still remains the deep blue ones. Tanzanite is originally a form of zoisite – chemical composition and all. Its name is specific to this crystalline form, which means that its properties are the same as that of zoisite – originally a rock that is brown, pink or grey in color. Polish Tanzanite
Of course, don’t be fooled, tanzanite loose stones do come out of the ground in their original blue shade as well; having been naturally heated inside the earth by the temperatures of Mt. Kilimanjaro – a volcanic mass in itself. It just so happens that even though naturally blue tanzanite is most valuable,

treated tanzanite has been accepted by the market as the next best option. Lastly, while heat treatment is accepted, there are other measures taken by jewelers and distributers to enhance the color and shine of the tanzanite. When heated, tanzanite crystals tend to ‘crackle’, which is every miner’s nightmare as it loses its value. Hence they use other techniques – such as coating the gem with cobalt and the like. If you’re shopping for loose stones, keep a check on quality and make sure you get a certificate of authenticity.
